Well, Warriors, it’s that time again, for me to round up a bunch of random things that I’ve noticed or have just been enjoying lately. As usual, there is nothing sponsored here. And this time around, I’ve got a bit of a more personal view for you!
I have made no secret of my distaste for the BMI scale. When I was in college/grad school, this measurement scale was the height (pun!) of information in exercise and fitness. I am happy to say that it is finally seeing a decline thanks to a huge number of studies that have debunked its usefulness. And there are two more to share. Both of which indicate that body composition (percent body fat) estimates should be used to determine obesity as the BMI is unable to differentiate body fat from lean tissue.
As if I needed another reason to recommend walking as an amazing form of exercise for those able. But, I’ve got one and you know I’m going to share it! This study found that walking can improve memory and recollection in adults with mild cognitive decline. This is obviously huge for dementia and Alzheimer’s research, but it’s also good news in the prevention game.
I have long since wondered if we are doing kids a disservice with youth sports leagues. Especially as my own kiddo is playing and we have seen unsportsmanlike conduct, pressure to compete in one sport year round, and win-at-all cost strategies all in Under 8 leagues. The value of organized sport for kids is in skill development, teamwork, learning rules and fair play. Oh, and fun. I found this article to be a good read that brings up many of these issues.
Ozempic. I am not even sure where to start with this. Yet again, Diet Culture has “won” and the cult of thin at all costs is reigning supreme. I am angry furious that medication that can possibly help individuals manage actual health conditions is being stolen by celebrities who can already afford personal chefs, nutritionists, personal trainers, and plastic surgery. But just as insidious is the idea that bodies must look a certain way to be valuable and what that has taken away from the body positivity/neutrality progress.
I’ve mentioned several times that I love our neighborhood. But gosh, in the summer, our neighborhood just smashes it. We’ve had more kids around to play and we also have 2 awesome older kids in the neighborhood who have been around to be parent’s helpers so the hubs and I can get some summer work done.
We’ve been in our house 11 years, which is the longest my husband and I have been in any home since our childhood ones. It also means that we’ve come up on some things that need doing. The hubs built some new planters for beside the front door that are amazing.
I also did an update on our guest bedroom. It was the first room in the house I painted when we moved in and it needed a refresh. It now houses a gallery wall of our travel snaps and some of our favorite momentos from vacations. It is also sporting a crisp white paint job, which will hopefully be the perfect backdrop for filming.
Oh, and I finally corralled all our home workout gear into/onto this handy IKEA pegboard system. It may seem totally simple, but I am in love with how it looks and functions. I can switch hooks around as we acquire new pieces and everything is in one simple, easy to access spot. It really is the little things in life.
If you’d like a deeper dive into this little nook, let me know in the comments, and until next time, be well friends!
